The Why?s Man

"My art is place specific and people specific." George Wyllie

Back to Poetry

IT DOESN'T ADD UP

If inches were like money

and changed a bit each day

we wouldn't find it funny

when measuring let's say

a coat, a carpet, piece of wood

or anything else you'd care to name

to find the inch had changed a bit

from mensurial pressure brought on it.

If inches were to fluctuate

like money

I would speculate

(like those with money do)

- that chaos would ensue.

(For EEC use, 'metres' may be substituted for 'inches')

As with his play about money and banks and attitudes to them, Wyllie questions the whole idea of financial speculation in this poem.
