The Why?s Man

"My art is place specific and people specific." George Wyllie

Back to The George Wyllie Education Initiative in Schools

The Advanced Higher English class at Hillhead High School in Glasgow set itself the task of writing haiku poems inspired by George Wyllie. The haiku were then used to decorate a huge paper boat created by the class.

There's a lot going on in this idea, as pupils research George's work for inspiration, an image, a sense about which they can write. Haiku writers use their senses, reflecting the seasons and nature in their imagery, and then... compare and contrast the images they have created to suggest a new way of seeing them. As a form, it is well-chosen to reflect the work of George Wyllie. They also recorded their poems to form part of the audio guide at the exhibition.
