The Why?s Man

"My art is place specific and people specific." George Wyllie

Back to... Influenced by George Wyllie

I believe that art should be a way of connecting people to some of the big questions about what it means to be a human being and live in the world. The important words in that sentence are 'people', 'questions', 'human' and 'live' - George Wyllie made art because he cared about the world. It is really that simple, George was an inspiration because he wanted to communicate about ideas... communicate clearly and directly... and communicate with everyone (not just folk skilled in the 'language' of art).

For George, art was a means to an end - not an end in itself. He loved the world and wanted us all to look out for it. He also knew that a smile was a very powerful way of creating a precious moment that people could share, and together, see the essence of things.
