The Why?s Man

"My art is place specific and people specific." George Wyllie

I loved and admired George very much. And Daphne...without whom...!!!

Our Day Down a Goldmine was a kind of revisionist version of his first piece with Bill Paterson...It was George looking at something again, with candour, and reshaping, remoulding for our relationship and... moving on...

That was to me, the most incredible thing about George...he had this most solid natural anarchy I have ever come across... this meant he questioned everything...including opinions he had held securely five minutes before, and he was soon as he jump ship, sink his own canoe.

He had a lovely wit, as an artist and person...and I am a proud owner of a painting of his - a Greek island steamer - and a sculpture of a fire engine. He was one of the most vibrant and alive people I have ever come across. George WAS.
