The Why?s Man
"My art is place specific and people specific." George Wyllie
JANICE FORSYTH, BROADCASTER
GEORGE WYLLIE IN 140 WORDS...
George's work usually makes me smile, but it always makes me think. The Straw Locomotive and The Paper Boat were monumental pieces that had me gasping at their sheer scale, but beneath the accessible exterior (a choo choo & a disposable vessel) were layers of thoughts and questions. Why did Glasgow lose its great industries? What happens to a city when it doesn't "make" anything anymore? What place does art have beyond a gallery? Does art take itself too seriously? Who can be an artist? George was proof that, no matter how old you are, you can change direction in your life, and you should always be asking questions. I was lucky to know George, but his spirit lives on in his work, with an example for all of us - be cheery, be cheeky, be Scottish, be international, be bold. Be!
