The Why?s Man
"My art is place specific and people specific." George Wyllie
Back to Words from George...
THIS WE CAN DO
THE MEANING OF WHAT WE PRESENTLY BELIEVE TO BE
CORRECT HAS TO BE RE-DEFINED. WE CANNOT SHAPE A NEW
ORDER BY USING THE SAME METHODS AND ATTITUDES
WHICH HAVE BROUGHT US TO THE POINT WHERE THEIR
FAILURE IS GLOBALLY EVIDENT.
THE ARTS CAN STIMULATE THE ESSENTIAL FLEXIBILITY OF
THOUGHT TO SUGGEST REMEDIAL REQUIREMENTS. BUT
MUCH OF 'ART' AND ATTITUDES TOWARDS IT ARE TINGED
WITH THE SAME PERVERSITY WHICH HAS BROUGHT US TO
OUR PRESENT STATE. THE FERTILISATION OF IDEAS
THROUGH ART IS DIMINISHED, AND MANY ARTISTS HAVE
ABDICATED THEIR AUTHORITY AND THIS ENERGY IS LOST.
ART IS AN ESSENTIAL FORCE IN SOCIETY.
WHY ELSE SHOULD IT EXIST?
WHAT THEN IS THE NATURE OF THAT ART WHICH
CAN INDICATE A REMEDY?
HOW CAN IT BE EXTENDED?
WHAT CAN WE DO?
This We Can Do
The nature of that art is the nature of your art and my art.
The nature of my art has meant being in public spaces and being beyond the gallery - schools, clubs, colleges, societies, universities, media, theatre, journeying at home, abroad, in the raz--a-ma-taz places and in quiet places; roving ranting raving and interpolating.
It can be extended by your art and my art.
My art is to encourage institutions to strengthen themselves by questioning themselves, with exemption from inclusion in that criticism.
I assert that art should no longer be appended to human activity and appended to human activity but become part of it. Definitions exist which attempt to relate art to society but are inadequate simply because they are definitions. They use words suggesting the attitudes of the past to determine a future which, being a future is the responsible flexibility of art.
Art is beyond the walls and roof of the gallery and my 'Spire' will see to that. Art is in nature and our being...synergy
Now with your essential involvement, we can attempt to answer "What we can we do". I'd say that was diffused question, addressed to the diffusion of the problems of a diffused human race. This question is dangerous, because someone out of scale will believe there is an answer and attempt to impose it.
The indisputable fact is that the evolution of humanity and its Planet is continuity - accelerating and decelerating to events in the infinity of time and space. To answer that question suggests that there is an answer when there is no one answer. There are only answers, and these might - just might - elicit enlightenment as we pass through time. The essential prerequisite for answers are questions, their totality dissipating notions not worth believing. The capacity to ask questions sets the human race apart.
