The Why?s Man

"My art is place specific and people specific." George Wyllie

Back to The Why?sMan

Born in Glasgow, and brought up not far from the Clyde and the shipyards, George Wyllie's fascination with the river, its people and its industries, was a life-long passion. As a young man, he worked in a Govan shipyard office. He later enlisted in the Royal Navy during World War Two and on return became a Customers Officer in Glasgow. George was promoted to a customs post on the land border in Ireland and a few years later returned to live on the Clyde coast in Gourock, while continuing his work as a customs officer. The sea, the Clyde, ships and boats are a recurring theme in his work and come in many shapes and forms...
